A manufacturer based in South East of England presented Watkins Hire heating hire division KwikHEAT with the task to replace existing on site temporary heaters with a noise level of 76dba @ 3 metres, whilst the heat from the existing hired heaters was acceptable the noise level generated was unacceptable to the building occupants.
Specialist heating technical sales manager Mark Biddell advised the client that the KwikHEAT MH300 hire heaters were considerably quieter @ 63dba @ 3 metres, with 92% efficiency, based on this the client was very impressed as the other companies he had enquired to could not even achieve 70dba @ 3 metres.
Mark Biddell visited site to carry out a full survey, the building was 55,000m3 and required a total of six MH300 site heater hire units to raise the heating level inside the building to comply with current HSE working regulations on temperature, to further increase efficiency and reduce overall number of heater on hire and reduce running costs Mark Biddell also suggested that five of the six high capacity industrial heaters supplied should have full recirculation, the sixth unit would introduce the fresh air requirement for the building.
Another feature that pleased the client was the fact that we were offering true building enviromental control, each site heater is fitted with a Frost stat for automatic building protection during cold snaps without the need for engineer intervention. Each KwikHEAT heater hire unit is also fitted with a time clock for unattended stop start of the heating to coincide with their working hours, and finally the KwikSTAT200 a wireless thermostat system was used to maintain the building temperature giving true building control.
Fuel management was also taken by the client, we drew up a schedule based on the heating equipment fuel requirements and delivered fuel accordingly to the six FuelPAK3000 bunded fuel tanks.

KwikHEAT Warm Air Heaters Why KwikHEAT Are The Best In The Industry
KwikHEAT heaters are the most technologically advanced heat for hire in the rental industry. Reason to choose KwikHEAT Heaters
Tank / Pressure Vessel Drying
Watkins Hire's customer was awarded a contract at a Petro chemical plant to chemically clean, dry, test and reline a tank which holds ammonia for the production of chemicals. These processes usually take around six weeks to complete with the removal of the old lining the cleaning, drying and testing. Historically the longest part of the project is the drying part that is undertaken after the tank has been cleaned. This has taken up to three weeks to completely dry to a relative humidity of less than 20%. The internal of the tank relative humidity needs to be below 20% to ensure the new lining attaches to the metal tank in the correct way to stop the ammonia corroding the tank. Previously they have utilised refrigerant de-humidifiers and desiccant dehumidifiers but the process drying time was only increased by 20% (the drying time was only reduced to 16 days from the 22 previous project). They contacted Watkins Hire Ltd heat for hire division KwikHEAT to gain our advise on speeding up the project and if KwikHEAT could provide a better solution to the drying application. A solution and proposal was provided to supply, install and commission a KwikHEAT MH170 indirect fired warm air heater to dry out the tank. Why did we not install a de-humidifier?...If you heat up the air it (by a chemical process) increases the airs capacity to hold more moisture. Watkins Hire Ltd heat for hire division KwikHEAT undertook tests on the MH170 , on the day of the test the ambient temperature of 18.5 Celsius and a humidity level of 77.2% relative humidity was recorded. A 27 metre length of ducting was installed to simulate our clients exact installation, the KwikHEAT was then put into operation, the temperature increased to 66 Celsius (a delta T of 47.5 Celsius) and the relative humidity was reduced to less than 1%.Data from the test was supplied to the customer with a prediction to cut their process drying time by one third from 16 days to 10 days. As the tank had suitable pipework to allow the heated air to be extracted out of the tank it was decided that only heating equipment was required to achieve the required duty inside the tank to reach the desired atmosphere before a new lining could be applied. KwikHEAT was awarded this project and the equipment was delivered, installed and commissioned on the same day. The tank took less than one week to completely dry out the tank to less than 10 % relative humidity which allowed the customer to focus on other projects bringing their timetable forward and saving their customer valuable time on the shut-down. Another factor that helped was that when the new lining was applied because the tank was warm the lining inside the tank dried quicker (1 day when usually it took 3 days), this also helped speed up the process. The customer and their customer were extremely pleased with the whole drying process and the time savings during the project and would not hesitate to utilise the KwikHEAT 170 indirect fired heater again and when another application (that is a little out of the ordinary) comes to light he will call us for an opinion. The KwikHEAT 170 was 62.5% quicker drying out the tank compared to using refrigerant de-humidifiers and desiccant dehumidifiers.
Watkins Hire 500kw Warm Air-Handling Unit
When a First Great Western wanted help to replace portable heaters, They contacted Watkins Hire for a hire solution that provided them with equipment that had no naked flame but can still provide large volumes of safe, dry, fume-free heat air to heat the train maintenance shed at Plymouth. The building was 150m long by 50m wide and 20m high.
First Great Western is part of FirstGroup plc, a UK-based leading international passenger transport group with an annual turnover of £2 billion and 50,000 employees across the UK and USA. First is the UK's largest bus operator, a major force in railways running one fifth of Britain's passenger rail network, and London's only tram operator.
The client explained to Watkins Hire that the building had 28 heat for hire portable heaters, which were not efficient at heating such a large space, the client also had many issues with the LPG and oil fired heaters:-
• Overall cost against the heat benefits
• Inefficient localized heating
• Too many units scattered throughout the building
• Labour intensive changing over LPG storage bottles.
• Risk of fuel spillages, in refilling oil fired heaters.
Watkins Hire interpreted the site requirements, equipment required for the project included a 582kW HeatGEN mobile packaged boiler plant fuelled by 35 sec fuel oil, 500kw Warm Air Handling Unit, 300 meters of 20 inch flexible ductwork, a 2400 litre bunded fuel tank, Fuel supply and management, 50 meters of flow and return pipework, system pumps to match the flow, volume and resistance of the pipe distribution network and AHU. The HeatGEN was selected from one of Watkins Hire extensive fleet of 350 mobile boiler plants.
The HeatGEN and associated plant was delivered the day after of the initial call, with Watkins Hire own transport and lifted onto site with Watkins Hire 12 tonne HIAB crane. With the 582kW HeatGEN mobile packaged boiler plant in place the next phase of the project to install. The installation proceeded well with Watkins Hire engineers on site as the boiler arrived; they installed all the pipework for the flow and return lines to the internal air handling units, with Watkins approved subcontractor installing the flexible 20 inch ductwork, with no disruption to the day to day running of the train maintenance.
From the time of delivery to site and Watkins Hire Engineers commissioning and handing over the plant to the client was completed within 2 days.
A spokesperson for the First Great Western said "We are extremely pleased with Watkins Hire and their professional approach, and the efficiency in the way the whole contract was handled, without hesitation we will be contacting Watkins Hire again. The standard of equipment and service was second to none, we now know what they can deliver"
Benefits received from Watkins Hire large space heating solution
• Heat received now justifies the Cost
• Efficient localized heating
• One 500kw AHU, air ducted to required locations
• No naked flames or fumes inside the building
• Minimised risk of fuel spillages.

Military Heating
During last winter Watkins Hire’s heat for hire division KwikHEAT received a call late on a Friday afternoon to provide an emergency heating system to a helicopter maintenance hanger as the installed radiant tube heating had failed, an engineer was dispatched immediately to assess their requirements.
As the shed was occupied by helicopter maintenance personnel they had previously rejected another companies proposal to install direct fired propane heaters, due to the number of heaters required, the changing of propane bottles and the fumes caused by these heaters.
KwikHEAT selected two of the KwikHEAT170 series 2 as the volume of the hanger was 300,000 cubic feet, the heaters were also supplied with two separate remote radio wireless thermostats to provide true temperature control. The KwikHEAT 170 series 2 has time clocks fitted as standard this would also provide unattended operation for stop and start times.
The equipment followed our engineer to site the same day, with the fuel tanks full of fuel, the equipment was installed and heat on Saturday morning.
The fuel usage was predicated and ongoing fuel management was provided by Watkins Hire. The equipment remained on site for the heating season, and the building occupants and the facility management company were very pleased with our performance and equipment which operated faultlessly, the facility management company was most impressed with the low noise level and the enviromental controls which gave them reduced running costs and emissions during the hire.
